    • Calculation and analysis of annual design highest tidal level in coastal area of Guangdong

      2012(6):8-14.

      Abstract (967) HTML (0) PDF 0.00 Byte (27) Comment (0) Favorites

Abstract:Twenty-eight coastal tidal gauge stations are applied to calculate the annual design highest tidal level of coastal area of Guangdong province. The data of these stations are checked in credibility, coherence and typicality. The series of the data can meet the requirement of related standards. The extreme values of these stations are treated. Pearson type three distribution ( P-Ⅲ) and extreme value type one distribution are employed to calculate the annual design highest tide level in coastal area of Guangdong province. The best distribution is selected through comparison of curve fitting. The average values of the annual highest tidal levels in Guangdong coast is increased from east to west, which is same with the change of tidal range. The Cv of coastal stations, more than 0.20 in general,is bigger that of estuarine stations because the Cv is affected greatly by storm surge. The annual design highest tidal level in east Guangdong coast is lower than that of west Guangdong coast. The highest occurs in the west Guangdong coast, where the tidal range is the biggest and the storm surge is more frequent, the lowest occurs in east Guangdong coast, where the tidal range is small, such as Gangkou and Shanwei stations.

      Abstract (1829) HTML (0) PDF 0.00 Byte (35) Comment (0) Favorites

Abstract:In the 1 000 km long tidal reach of the Yangtze River, semi-diurnal tide wave goes against the stream from the estuary arrives upstream of Anqing, Anhui province. The reach is divided into the with-tide area and without-tide area by the tidal mark, and the current characteristics change area is divided by the tidal current mark. Therefore, the location of them is significant for the economic development, agriculture planning, ecological environment, navigation, waterway engineering, harbor construction, navigation safety and scientific development, etc. of the area. Based on the spot investigation data, and by the numerical simulation and harmonic analysis, it is concluded that the tidal mark of the Yangtze River is located between Anqing and Nanjing, the tidal current mark is located between Zhenjiang and Jiangxinsha. The new idea is quite different from the tradition idea, i.e., in general regard, the tidal mark of the Yangtze River is located between Tongling and Wuhu of Anhui province, and the tidal current mark is located downstream Jiangyin.

    • Characteristics of suspended sediment transport in Yangshan harbor and its adjacent areas

      2012(6):21-27.

      Abstract (1907) HTML (0) PDF 0.00 Byte (31) Comment (0) Favorites

Abstract:Based on the SWEM2D model, a 2D flow and sediment numerical model is built including Yangshan harbor, the Yangtze estuary and Hangzhou bay. The measured data observed from Yangshan harbor in May 2004 shows that the vertical shear of the suspended sediment plays such a small impact on its sediment transport that a 2D sediment numerical model can almost represent the sediment transport near Yangshan harbor. The model result is in good agreement with the measured data which observed from Yangshan harbor and its adjacent areas in May 2004. On that basis, a transport velocity of suspended sediment during the spring, middle and neap tide in the Yangshan harbor and its adjacent areas is calculated. The result shows that in the Yangshan harbor, the Euler transport plays predominant role in suspended sediment transport while the Stokes drift and tidal pump play secondary. The high concentration of suspended sediment in the west of the Yangshan harbor is mainly caused by the convergence of the sediment transport from the Yangtze estuary and Hangzhou bay. Near the east of Nanhui beach, the suspended sediment transport separates into two parts: one flows northward, the other, firstly, flows towards Hangzhou bay along the underwater sediment channel at the south of Nanhui beach and then flows to Yangshan harbor by the suspended sediment transport from Hangzhou bay.

      Abstract (1375) HTML (0) PDF 0.00 Byte (37) Comment (0) Favorites

Abstract:The conventional methods, which are based on limit equilibrium approach, commonly used in the design of anchored sheet pile walls do not consider the method of construction. However, the influence of construction method in real projects is usually significant. A series of physical model experiments are conducted using both excavation and backfill methods to measure some of the parameters reflecting the behavior of sheet pile walls, including wall deformations, wall bending moments, and anchor forces. The study results indicate that walls constructed by backfill method yield significantly higher bending moments and wall deformations, but lower anchor forces.

      2012(6):43-47.

      Abstract (1880) HTML (0) PDF 0.00 Byte (38) Comment (0) Favorites

Abstract:A 2-D mathematical model with multiple nested grids of tidal current and sediment in estuary was set up. With the help of this model, the flow and sediment transport field near the artificial island of south fort in eastern Hebei province was simulated. It was concluded from the flow field simulation that the current velocity decreased at the back of the island and at each side of the approach bridge as a result of their interception effect, and increased in front of the island for its deflecting effect. In addition, the hydrodynamic conditions at different part of the sand digging pools also revealed various characteristics because of the changes of topography. The results of the simulation of sediment field coincided with the influence of hydrodynamic conditions change on sedimentation: siltation happened where flow strength decreases, while erosion happened where flow strength increases.

Abstract:Electro-osmosis can reduce the water content of silt quickly and improve its undrained shear strength. Hence, silt can be turned into resources by electro-osmosis. But the major problem to be resolved is to raise the efficiency and save energy during engineering applications. The comparative tests between natural drainage and three ways of reducing water content by electro-osmosis in silt were conducted using a newly developed apparatus.Water discharge, current and electric potential were recorded during the tests, and water content and undrained shear strength were measured at the beginning and the end of the tests. Then soil characteristics were studied from the point of energy consumption, electro-osmotic efficiency and costs on the basis of the measured data. The results show that when dealing with dredged silt by electro-osmosis, the purposes of improving efficiency and saving energy to reduce the water content are achieved by moving the electrodes parallel and searching appropriate conditions of electrodes distance and working time.

Two typical excavation case histories, one with inside struts and retaining wall, another with soil nails and shot concrete covering, are given to demonstrate the engineering feasibility of the developed program.

Abstract:This article explores the laws of displacement and settlement during construction of the riprap embankment based on the analysis of the monitoring data of the construction. The loading rate and the layered loading height shoud be under control in the process of the dyke construction. It is feasible to control the loading speed and layered loading height. Measures such as decreasing the loaded height, loading on both sides of the dyke simultaneously, timely following of apron rockfills and extending the time of permanent load should be taken to make sure the effective and safe dyke construction.
